Extra-curricular Opportunities for Summer and Year-Round

This page provides information on community resources for everything from drop-in tutoring to summer art programs, to scholarship opportunities. Project Pull is a paid summer internship program that is sponsored by the City and County of San Francisco. Now in its 13th year, Project Pull provides professional mentorship to highly-motivated, promising high school students from the diverse communities within San Francisco. During the eight week program, our interns get a chance to explore careers in architecture, engineering, business and the sciences by interning with a full-time City employee from various City departments. Spotlight on the Arts places young people ages 14-17 in paid summer internships for a six-week period in San Francisco's non-profit arts community. Since 1993 they have placed over 500 youths in internships at organizations such as the Asian Art Museum, Mission Cultural Center of Latino Arts, Cartoon Art Museum, the A.C.T. costume shop, and many more. TILT summer film camp: Film Arts Foundation's youth program, TILT, is inviting teens to a hands-on summer film production workshop with professional filmmakers at the Ninth Street Independent Film Center in San Francisco. TILT teaches young people the fundamentals of moviemaking and media literacy through hands-on training in video production. Spend the summer learning how to shoot and edit film or video. Participation fee required.

Goldman Sachs Foundation Youth Prize for Excellence in International Education: The competition asks students to select a problem or challenge that affects their local community as well as a community outside the United States; to create an in-depth written, audio, video, or animated feature that compares and contrasts how these two communities have addressed the issue; and to explain why these approaches reflect the different cultural backgrounds of those involved, and what lessons the different communities could learn from each other. Five winners will be selected and will receive up to $10,000 each as well as an all-expense paid trip to New York City. 826 Valencia provides many opportunities for youth, from creative writing workshops, to drop-in tutoring services.

BAYCAT provides classes in filmmaking, media and design in the summer and throughout the year.

Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema is looking for volunteers for August and September. Contact them to sign up. It is a great way to learn more about the film industry and the Bernal Heights neighborhood.

Out of Site: Center for Arts Education, provides arts related activites and classes for students.

Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts offers many classes in the arts in San Francisco's Mission District.

University of California College Prep online offers free college prep services to students and parents, as well as test prep and on-line courses.
