Metro's balanced mix of programs builds students' leadership abilities, develops their academic and creative skills, and fosters community.
At Metro we recognize the importance of providing academic support outside of the classroom so that all students can succeed. Students develop individual learning plans with their advisors that may include a variety of before and after school tutoring sessions. The Learning Center is open from 9:05 am to 5:00 pm. The entire Metro staff supports and advises students on their journey to college. Karla Romero (karla@es-metro.org), Metro's College Advisor, is available to students, parents, teachers and college representatives Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 AM to 5:00 PM and other times available by appointment. Resource materials for testing, college selection and applications are available in the College Advising office, located on the third floor. Karla can be reached by email at karla@es-metro.org or by phone at (415) 550-5920. College representatives will visit Metro regularly. Please take advantage of these opportunities to get acquainted with the college admissions process and to compare the variety of colleges. Refer to Prep HQ or the weekly e-news for upcoming activities. Creating relationships is a core principle of Metro's educational philosophy, and advisory is the place where those relationships are nurtured, and lasting ties to our community are formed. Each student has a faculty advisory who provides academic guidance, support, and facilitates communication between home and school. Lower divison students (9th and 10th grades) meet three times weekly in advisory to engage in community building activities, support academics, and critically discuss cultural and political topics affecting our society. Academic Seminar is a class that prepares 11th and 12th graders in the following areas: 1. research and apply to college; 2. explore careers through the Workplace Learning Experience, a 10-week Spring interniship of the student's choice; and, 3. prepare for the Graduation Portfolio Defense. The community meeting is a time for students and staff to come together to celebrate Metro's 4 P's - Respect for People, Place, Purpose, and Pride. Student advisories organize and lead community meetings and showcase student work, recognize the achievements and contributions of students, share community announcements, and surface issues facing the school community. Fire Community meetings are held Monday, from 1:10 to 1:50 in the Drama classroom. Water Community meetings are held Fridays from 1:10 to 1:50pm in the Auditorium. To think well you need to eat well. We offer organic, well-balanced, nutritional lunches through Revolution Foods featuring fresh, healthy ingredients. Each day of the week a different entree is offered which includes seasonal fruits and vegetables. Enrichment Electives/Clubs/Athletics Afterschool enrichment electives and clubs take place at lunch or the afternoons.
