FAQ About Our New Home

Why are we moving?

The lease to our current location has expired. 2340 Jackson Street was intended by SFUSD to be a temporary location.

What are the benefits of this move?

We anticipate access to facilities that will directly support our program and community: large classrooms, a gym, science labs, a cafeteria, a yard, fields, basketball courts, and a large auditorium. We look forward to community meetings that will hold the entire school, new opportunities for science, better possibilities for developing sports, more space for students outside, less crowded transitions between classes, and convenient freeway access, and parking. It is a location that Metro can stay for several years and build community relationships.

Metro will be taking over the location that is currently occupied by Leadership High School. The space is currently set up for us to move in . Metro will maintain it’s small school feel even though it will be located on the same campus as Burton.

Where is our new location and how will we get there?

Metro will be located at 400 Mansell Avenue, in the Southeastern corner of San Francisco in the Portola District .

Will we be the only school in the building?

No. But mostly, it will feel that way. Sala Burton will be on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The students at Burton are required to wear a uniform so that Metro students and Burton students can be distinguished from one another.

What type of a school is Sala Burton?

The students and staff of Burton are good people, just like the people at Metro. They have students from many different backgrounds, neighborhoods, ethnicities, just like our school. Sala Burton is a traditional academic high school that offers a wide variety of courses that prepare students for college. They also work hard on building a strong community and having rigorous curriclum. Students at Burton wear uniforms, so it will be relatively easy to know who attends which school. The Metro staff is confident that we can have a positive relationship with Sala Burton.

How will Metro and Sala Burton share the same building?

Because the building is so large, the two schools will use completely separate parts of the building. Metro will be on the 1st floor and Burton on the 2nd and 3rd. We will have separate school entrances, offices, hallways, classrooms, and bathrooms. We anticipate sharing common facilities like the cafeteria, gym, auditorium, and fields.

Will Metro share classes with Burton HS?

No. Metro will continue to have its own program, students, teachers, school community. There will be no overlap with Burton HS.

Which spaces will Metro share with Burton HS?

We anticipate sharing the gym, auditorium, and a very large yard. The leadership at the schools will create a schedule for students so that both schools do not need these spaces at the same time. Therefore, though we technically share these spaces, it won’t feel like we are.

Will the school be safe?

Metro will continue to be a safe school. The staff and students of Metro care about our school community and will build positive relationships with the neighborhood and Burton HS before we move to the new building. We will continue to have a student supervisor and staff to monitor the school building during the school day and any other events that take place.
