The learning at Metro is contextual, active, and authentic. Project-based work and field studies are the norm. Academic competencies are integrated with professional skills and guided by essential questions developed by students and staff. Academic content is linked to California State Curriculum Frameworks and state standards, and meets all University of California/California State University requirements.

English

World Literature invites us to connect to the human experience in the world. Understanding diverse cultures and examining our role in this complex world will be our quest for the year. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through projects that involve interpretation of literature, research, writing, visual arts and technology skills.

Math

The Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) is an exciting new way for high school students to learn mathematics. IMP's four-year program of problem-based mathematics replaces the traditional Algebra I-Geometry-Algebra II/Trigonometry-Precalculus sequence. This new curriculum meets college entrance requirements and prepares students to use problem-solving skills at school and on the job.

Science

Integrated Science is a two year science course that focuses equally on Life Science, Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics. Students cover topics such as Genetics, Global arming, Alternative Sources of Energy, Force and Motion, Evolution, Climate and the Periodic Table. This is a project based curriculum where students write research papers, develop slide show presentations, build models, and compile portfolios.

History

World History A is a one-year course that provides 9th graders with a strong foundation in modern world history and equips students with the historical thinking skills they will need to succeed in high school and college history courses. This course is the first part of the two-year (9th and 10th grade) World History curriculum at METRO and will explore the time from the Columbian Exchange and competing claims in the Americas to the Age of Imperialism and the struggles for democracy as colonies become new nations in the late 20th Century.

Drama

This class is workshop based; students experiment and try new concepts through movement, games, and activities. Questions we examine through this course include:
How can we best convey these thoughts, concepts, ideas, and emotions?
How can we explore these things through movement, sound, and dialogue?
How can we best make our audience learn, feel, or understand?

Digital Media

In Digital Media students explore the creative and practical applications of digital technologies. Students have the opportunity to create multimedia presentations, explore digital photography and digital movie making, and learn to use spreadsheets and graphing software to enhance their understanding of academic concepts.
