How do I move up to 11th grade?
In order to prepare students for the upper division at Metro, each is required to do the following:
* complete state-required tests (cahsee)
* Successfully pass required courses
* Consistently score “proficient” on projects & exhibitions
* Submit and present a benchmark portfolio at the end of 10th grade
Why a Benchmark Portfolio?
Graduation from Metro means not only that a student has met the state’s minimum standards, but more importantly, that she or he has demonstrated a breadth of leadership and cognitive skills along with deep content-specific understanding, which are essential for success in college and lead to success in the workplace and life.
What are the Leadership Skills?
* Communicate Effectively and Persuasively
* Manage Projects Effectively
* Think Critically
* Solve Problems Resourcefully
* Express Yourself Creatively
* Collaborate Productively
You can learn more about each on the Leadership Skills page.
What is required for the Benchmark Portfolio?
-
At least 4 teacher-approved “artifacts” (projects or assignments) from 4 different subjects that show growth in a Leadership Skill or proficient use of a Leadership Skill
-
A cover letter that introduces your Benchmark Portfolio
-
A reflection for each artifact that explains your growth or proficient use of the Leadership Skills
-
A formal presentation and defense of your Benchmark Portfolio to your advisory
How do I choose my artifacts?
Artifacts need to meet three eligibility requirements:
-
Grade of 3 or higher on the grading rubric
-
Proficient in spelling/grammar
-
Electronic format with professional appearance (photographs are required of non-digital assignments)
You may revise assignments/projects that you’ve already done in order to meet the eligibility requirements.
When will I put all of these requirements together?
Your advisor will be coaching you through the process of creating your Benchmark Portfolio during advisory.
What if I’m a ninth grader?
Ninth graders will be working on the first draft of their Benchmark Portfolio.
They have the same requirements as tenth graders, except that ninth graders will keep their portfolios in a folder and will not present their Benchmark Portfolios.
Am I going to get to see others’ presentations?
Yes! Each ninth and tenth grader is required to sign up to watch one tenth grade presentation and one senior presentation, and complete two Presentation Observation Sheets. (AND/OR you will present in advisory)
When will the presentations happen?
You will present during a designated time slot on the afternoon of May 28th, 29th or 30th.
